FAQ

How could a counsellor at Health & Wellness help me?

Counsellors can assist with many challenges that students may experience. Some of these challenges may include stress, anxiety, depression, relationship and family issues, sexuality, grief and loss, self- esteem, as well as other mental health concerns. Counsellors at the Health & Wellness Centre can also provide crisis support, as well as referrals to community services and resources. If you would like to speak to a counsellor, please drop in between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. We provide walk-in support (problem solving, crisis intervention, community referrals as needed) as well as ongoing, short-term counselling. Groups are also offered throughout the school year.

I am concerned about my student’s well-being. What should I do?

If you are concerned about a student’s well-being, please follow the Student Crisis Support Protocol. For more information see the Crisis Support page.

What should I bring to my first visit to see the doctor?

Do I have to wait to see a doctor even if I have a scheduled appointment?

We understand how frustrating it can be to wait even though you have an appointment. There may be unforeseen circumstances that need the doctor’s attention which can extend a patients visit. If you are in a hurry to class or to another appointment, please notify the receptionist and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Why do I have to wait so long if I come in as a walk-in to see the doctor?

Appointments take priority over walk-ins (unless there is a medical emergency). We try out best to ensure all students get seen. If you wish to be seen right away and would like to visit another walk-in clinic, please see the receptionist for the closest clinics. Or, we could book you an appointment for the near future.

I haven't heard back about my test results- should I be worried?

Consider “no news as good news” if you haven’t heard from us regarding your test results- you can assume that the results are normal. Or alternatively, you are welcome to give us a call to confirm your results.

Normal test results can often be given to patients directly over the telephone. Sometimes, however, a follow-up appointment is requested by the physician to do further testing or to inquire about how you are feeling. The receptionist may call you to book a follow up appointment- they may not necessarily know the details of your results or the specific reason for follow up. We recommend reviewing your results with your doctor for the most accurate information.
