SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDING

Entrance Scholarships

Graduate Scholarships

A limited number of Graduate Scholarships may be available to full-time students in the following four programs:

All applicants will automatically be considered for any available scholarships (you do not need to apply). Although subject to available funds and the allocation decisions of the Admissions Committee, typically a Graduate Scholarship is awarded to all or most eligible students (both domestic and international), at approximately $1,500 per semester. The amount of this scholarship is normally communicated to incoming graduate students as part of their offer of acceptance into the program.

Scholarships are not currently available for part-time students.

President's Scholarship

The President's Scholarship is valued at $7,500 per academic year for a period of two years. The Scholarship is currently offered to one full-time student per year of admission in each of the following four programs:

The scholarship is offered to the top incoming student to the program, as determined by that program's Admissions Committee. All applicants are automatically considered for this scholarship (you do not need to apply). The President's Scholarship may be offered in addition to another scholarship, such as the Graduate Scholarship, or as a stand-alone scholarship.

Recipients of the President's Scholarship must maintain a grade average of 80% throughout the duration of their studies to remain eligible for the scholarship.

OCAD U India Scholarship

The OCAD U India Scholarship is valued at $10,000 per academic year for a period of two years. The Scholarship will be offered to the top Indian applicant each year to any one of the following programs:

The scholarship is offered to the top incoming Indian student, as determined by a Scholarship Committee. All applicants who are residents of India and who do not have Canadian citizenship are automatically considered for this scholarship (you do not need to apply).

Recipients of the OCAD U India Scholarship must maintain a grade average of 80% throughout the duration of their studies to remain eligible for the scholarship.

External Scholarships

Current students and applicants to full time graduate programs at OCAD U are strongly encouraged to apply to the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program.

An information session on SSHRC and OGS awards for OCAD U students was held on September 27, 2011. Please click here to view a copy of the presentation slides.

*Note that you cannot hold an OGS scholarship and a SSHRC scholarship in the same academic year (but you can apply to both)

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)

The Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships program seeks to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students in the social sciences and humanities who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. These scholarships are valued at $17,500 over 12 months (non-renewable) and are open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents only.

OCAD U students (undergraduate and graduate) must apply through the Office of Graduate Studies. Non-OCAD U students should apply through their current university; other applicants apply directly to SSHRC. For more information, please visit the SSHRC website at:

http://www.sshrc.ca/site/apply-demande/students-etudiants-eng.aspx

For current OCAD U students, SSHRC applications are due to the Office of Graduate Studies by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 21, 2011.

Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program encourages excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels. The scholarship is valued at $5,000 per academic term for either two or three consecutive terms and is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international students in Canada on a student visa.

All students must apply through the school they are currently attending. OCAD U students (undergraduate and graduate) must therefore apply through the Office of Graduate Studies. Applicants who are not currently in school must apply to the school they plan to attend. For more information, please visit:

https://osap.gov.on.ca/OSAPPortal/en/OSAPStarttoFinish/GraduateStudents/index.htm

For current OCAD U students, OGS applications are due to the Office of Graduate Studies by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011.

NOTE: Students in the Digital Futures and Inclusive Design programs are not eligible to apply for Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS), as these are cost-recovery programs. For cost-recovery programs, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities does not provide loans from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) or Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS). As a result, Ontario loans and scholarships are not available to students in this program.

Ontario Graduate Fellowships

OCAD University has funding from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer Ontario Graduate Fellowships (OGF). The amount of funds available varies from year to year.

The Fellowship will be granted to the graduate student with the highest Grade Point Average at the conclusion of their first year of study (e.g. April 2012). Full-time students in the following programs are eligible:

The Fellowship will not affect any internal scholarships granted by OCAD University and will not be affected by the receipt of external awards such as SSHRC or OGS scholarships.

Graduate Assistantships

OCAD University endeavors to provide full time graduate students with a Graduate Assistantship, in the form of a Teaching Assistantship (TA) or Research Assistantship (RA) in the Faculties of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Art or Design. Graduate Assistantships are subject to availability and compatibility of student’s skills with Faculty needs and individual faculty research projects. These positions typically range in pay from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 per semester.

Shortlisted candidates or accepted students may be asked to complete a Research and Teaching Skill Summary form to assist the University in finding a suitable Graduate Assistantship for the student. Information on the availability of Graduate Assistantships is included in the letter of offer.

Financial Aid

Questions about Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) loans, bursaries and other financial assistance should be directed to Financial Aid and Awards. Please visit the Financial Matters section of the OCAD U website for more information.
