ENGLISH LANGUAGE PATHWAY
In-Class Support for ESL Students in First-Year
If you are entering first year at OCAD University and this is your first time studying at an English university, English Language Pathway is your path to success. English Language Pathway is designed to help you do your best in your first-year courses and prepare you for the rest of your studies at OCAD U.
English Language Pathway is a group of first year courses with extended tutorials and added ESL support all year long. It includes three Liberal Arts & Sciences courses and one Studio course.
All four courses are credit courses required for first year students.
English Language Pathway will help you build the English language skills you need. It is designed to ensure that you do your best in your first year courses and that you are prepared for the rest of your studies at OCAD U.
You will:
- get help understanding your lectures and readings
- gain confidence making formal presentations in English and participating in class discussions
- learn specialized art and design vocabulary
- learn what instructors expect in OCAD U courses
- get help with your writing assignments
- practice presentation/critique skills
- learn techniques for getting your reading and studying done more quickly
- learn in a small group with lots of support
When you enrol in English Language Pathway, you will be registered in a special section of each of these courses. In the Pathway sections, you will receive extra time and help developing your language skills and completing assignments. For all your other first year courses, you will enrol in the regular course sections.

GDES 1B16: Colour in Context* (see below)
LBST 1B04: Global Visual and Material Culture: Prehistoric to 1800
LBST 1B12 The Essay and the Argument: ESL (full year)
Winter Semester
LBST 1B12 The Essay and the Argument: ESL (full year)
LBST 1B05 Global Visual and Material Culture: 1800 to the Present
*Faculty of Art Students: GDES 1B16 is an approved substitute for GART 1B04: Colour Exploration
*Drawing and Painting Students: GDES 1B16 will fulfill your elective.
*Environmental Design, Industrial Design and Material Art & Design students: GDES 1B16 is an approved substitute for GDES 1B24: Colour and Two-Dimensional Design
