Criticism & Curatorial Practice

This cross-disciplinary area is the first undergraduate program in Canada designed to educate artists as curators and critics. The Criticism and Curatorial Practice program recognizes that people who work in all aspects of the cultural sector benefit from the direct experience of studio-based learning.

You begin with an overview of contemporary art and art history and learn first-hand about museum and gallery systems. You take courses in art writing and contemporary theory along with your studio practice.

Hands-on field placements or internships in a variety of cultural institutions expand upon your classroom experiences. You may work on exhibitions, publications and with community arts organizations.

This environment offers students an exciting and fulfilling future at the centre of today’s visual culture. As a graduate, you are uniquely positioned to take an active role in the following fields:

  • independent or museum-affiliated curator
  • arts writer, editor, critic
  • community arts advocate
  • gallery manager or owner
  • exhibition designer
  • museum staff
  • arts administrator
  • arts educator
