Visual Resources Image Services

The library provides digitization and acquisition services for instructional images.

We source or license images (directly from artists or vendors) upon faculty request for instructional purposes. Contact: Scott Hillis Ext. 273; shillis@ocadu.ca

We digitize images for faculty use when permitted under the Fair Dealing provisions of the Copyright Act. Contact: Scott Hillis Ext. 273; shillis@ocadu.ca

We digitize images from faculty image collections (as long they are the creators and original copyright owners for requested images). We ask that these images be made available to the OCAD University community through the OCAD U Image Library to support university research and instruction in exchange for this service (images will be made available through ARTstor). Contact: Victoria Sigurdson, Ext. 344; vsigurdson@ocadu.ca

As of September 2014, all image requests are served via http://artstor.org (and are available only to registered OCAD U students, staff and faculty). Please note that we no longer provide physical copes of image requests on CD/DVD.

For information on creating an ARTstor account, please see

Turnaround time

We require up to 2 weeks (for up to 50 images). Turnaround times ultimately depend on the method of procurement and overall volume of requests. For larger volume requests, we process images in batches according to class presentation dates to facilitate efficient access. We can provide specific information on turnaround time upon receipt of the request.

Service scope

With the volume of image requests and available resources at this time, the imaging service is only available to current OCAD U faculty for instructional purposes only (these services do not include processing images for publication at this time).

Image Services will not process the following types of source materials:

-Low-quality images derived from hard-copy printouts
-Newspaper clippings
-Double-page spread images where the gutter of the book runs through the image
-Images from personal collections for which the person making the request does not own the copyright

By utilizing the these services and accessing the OCAD U Image Library (now in ARTstor), requestors agree to the following:

-The images digitized or licensed by request, permanently become part of the OCAD U Image Library collection (except those already available from the open web with the appropriate terms of use).
-For digitization requests, print resources must be available to Visual Resources staff over the processing period to support digitization and/or cataloguing activities.
-Complete identification for requested images must be provided (if this information is not readily available from the accompanying print publication or from labels on analog photographic materials). The general rule for image identification purposes is: who, what, when, where, and how for each image.

Example:
Who: Frank Lloyd Wright
What: Darwin Martin House
When: 1904
Where: Buffalo, New York
How: Brick and mortar
