Additional contributions from OCADU faculty:

We use Google translation tools in Second Life that translate typed CHAT into many languages through virtual avatars. (Judith Doyle, Faculty of Art)

Patience! I take time to let students find their voices. I downplay participation – I use a growth grade. I let students bring written responses after classes, when they have time to formulate answers without pressure! I use group discussions to facilitate various voices and opinions. (Keith Rushton, Faculty of Design)

I ask all students (ESL or not) to tell me their preferred name and how to pronounce it, and I correct my class list to reflect this. (Jesse Jackson, Faculty of Design)

A helpful strategy I found was getting students to exchange contact info with 3 other students, so that if they wanted to ask questions or get clarification, there was an immediate forum or “buddy system.” (Son Van Huynh, Faculty of Design)

As a strategy to increase one’s ability to relate and empathize with ESL students – actively put yourself in situations/places where you are the minority. (Meghan Price, Faculty of Design)

Don’t make the ESL students feel they’re the “others”. Approach them as you are also wanting to learn from them. (Soyang Park, Liberal Studies)

As designers, we move into our clients’ cultures and require communicating those cultures to audiences. This requires strategy and education. When this is communicated to students, it can become a strong motivational device for incorporating issues of culture into their own work. (Jayson Zaleski, Faculty of Design)

I teach first year students and hold critiques every class. I ask my students to write a paragraph in preparation for the critique. I encourage them to read directly from this page in class in order to get over having to think on their feet. (Saskia van Kampen, Faculty of Design)
