OCAD U + Canada 150
OCAD U events celebrating Canada's 150th anniversary

The year 2017 is not only Canada’s 150th birthday, but also OCAD University’s 140th. Canada’s oldest university of art, design and digital media had its beginning in the decade after Confederation. In many ways, OCAD U’s evolution follows Canada’s evolution, as its faculty and alumni have shaped our nation’s cultural identity and legacy.

raise a flag: Works from the Indigenous Art Collection

raise a flag: works from the Indigenous Art Collection explores First Nations, Inuit and Métis art of the 21st century as the basis for a more inclusive Canadian visual art heritage. Housed in Ottawa, the Indigenous Art Collection is unique in its acquisition of art directly from the artists and their representatives over the past 50 years and has made it one of the most important and comprehensive art collections of contemporary Canadian Indigenous art in Canada and beyond. The selected works, from 2000 to 2015, display a distinct relationship drawn from Indigenous visual culture contrasting and chronicling significant national narratives reflecting upon Canadian heritage, diversity and collective memory. In light of and in tandem with Canada’s 150 commemorations, raise a flag represents alternative discourses and uncovers missing narratives from the framework of a national identity.

raise a flag is produced with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council.
