Foundry Overview

Foundry (Room 152) offers students a facility dedicated to the casting of work in bronze and aluminum utilizing the "lost wax" process. This process involves:

Foundry Materials

Consumable materials can be purchased from technicians or class assistants during open studio hours. Please check studio and shop schedules in order to ensure you are not interrupting a class when you go to buy materials. Materials can only be bought using OCAD U tickets. Tickets can be purchased from the Cashier, Monday to Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Cashier is located in the Rosalie Sharp Pavilion, 115 McCaul Street, Level 1.

The following items are readily available for students to purchase:

Various micro-crystalline waxes
Ceramic shell moulding material
Bronze
Aluminum

Facilities & Equipment

Stationary: Sand blaster, band saw, sanders, grinding wheel, polisher, tig welder, wax melter, drill press

Portable: Angle grinders, drills, pneumatic tools, wax working tools, chisels

Mouldmaking Overview

The Mouldmaking Studio (Room 154) offers students the materials and equipment required for the reproduction of 3D objects. For example, the reproduction of soft clay or plasticine models to harder, more permanent materials like plasters, cements, plastics and acrylics, along with metals. Processes commonly undertaken in the Mouldmaking Studio include:

Mouldmaking Materials

Silicones, alginates, latex and rubber mouldmaking materials

Facilities & Equipment

Marble bench tops, clay slab roller, vacuum pump, triple beam balance scales, electronic scales

Various mouldmaking hand tools are available for use, but students are encouraged to develop their own personal tool kit consisting of: chisels, scrapers, modeling tools and measuring tapes.
