Overview
The Fibre Studio (Room 201) offers students access to fabric studio equipment and the opportunity to explore the media and practices of textiles, including:
- Weaving
- Printing
- Paper-making
- Felt-making
- Sewing
- Embroidery
- Knitting
- Beading
- Image transfer
- Dyeing
- Batik
- Garment and 2D sewn construction
- Basketry
- Silk painting
- Silk paper/fusion
Schedule
Materials
Consumable materials can be purchased from technicians or class assistants during open studio hours. Please check studio and shop schedules in order to ensure you are not interrupting a class when you go to buy materials. Materials can only be bought using OCAD U tickets. Tickets can be purchased from the Cashier, Monday to Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Cashier is located in the Rosalie Sharp Pavilion, 115 McCaul Street, Level 1.
The following materials are readily available to students for purchase:
Stencil fabric
Heat transfer paper
Printing base; clear, opaque
Muslin fabric
Cotton fabric
Solvy bags
Fleece
Felting needles
Mylar
Disperse dye
Facilities & Equipment
Weaving: AVL Dobby Looms and Leclerc floor looms, table looms, tapestry frame looms and floor looms
Printing: 28ft x 5ft large table, 16ft x 4ft medium table for repeat printing (silk screen, block, stencil, etc.)
Felt-making: drum carders, hand carders, needle-felting machines, hand-needle felting tools
Papermaking: Hollander 2lb capacity beater, press and dry-racks, tools for sheet forming and casting, vacuum table for forming
Additional Equipment: Dark room with vacuum table for photo exposure (for screen printing), pressure washer and spray room, airbrush equipment, dye kitchen with three stoves (natural, disperse, acid and reactive dyes used), two heat presses, sewing machines; quilt machine, sergers, knit machines, smocking machine, batik tools and wax, bead looms, irons/large ironing surfaces, reference library, computer cluster in studio
The Fibre Studio accepts donations of textiles and fabrics for student use. Donations will be handled on a case-by-case basis and inquiries should be directed to Studio Management.
