DRAWING & PAINTING
Overview
The Drawing & Painting Studios support: drawing, painting in watercolour, oil, acrylic, traditional figurative and observational practices, digital and materials-based processes, and a range of alternative approaches to art creation.
Studios are populated with a selection of easels, tables and drawing horses. There are many studios with skylights to provide natural light. Otherwise, the studios use 98 per cent spectrum colour-corrected fluorescent lighting to give a more accurate reading of colour. Lighting tracks fitted with gooseneck lamps give a range of customizability when lighting still-life setups or figurative study. All of the studios are equipped with sinks and oily waste canisters for convenient disposal of oily rags and contaminated solvent or oil. The studios house a variety of props that faculty use to create interesting and challenging arrangements for study. There are a few full-size skeletons that can be used for anatomical study.
The Build Shop supports strainer/stretcher and braced panel construction, and can be used for open study. The workshop contains a large area for temporary storage and a Spray Booth. There is an assortment of hand tools that students can use in their creative pursuits. Students are able to purchase both flat and beveled 1” x 1 3/4” x 6’ lengths of wood for building. On occasion, they may purchase mahogany ply for building braced panels.
The Drawing and Painting Digital Suite is equipped with Smartboard interactive whiteboards and Wacom Cintiq interactive displays for instruction in digital painting. The scale of the Smartboard and sensitivity of the Wacom permit students to pursue digital painting in an intuitive manner. There are currently six stations in this studio to support digital curriculum and creative pursuits.
