GRAPHIC DESIGN 2013-2014
OCAD University (OCAD U) is Canada’s largest specialized university of art, media and design. Located on a twelve-building campus in the heart of downtown Toronto, OCAD University offers a vibrant and stimulating work environment for over 400 faculty and more than 4300 undergraduate and 200 graduate students. Committed to excellence and contemporary approaches to education, OCAD University offers 13 undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) or a Bachelor of Design (BDes) degree, and seven graduate programs that result in the Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Master of Design (MDes) or the Master of Arts (MA). OCAD University has recently launched the interdisciplinary Digital Futures program, and will welcome its first cohort of students in its new interdisciplinary Indigenous Visual Culture BFA in September 2013. The University has experienced remarkable growth over the past five years and requires outstanding creative researchers/practitioners and gifted teachers to join OCAD U in an exciting period of institutional development and opportunity.
The Faculty of Design invites applications for the following anticipated course offerings in the Fall/Winter 2013/14 academic year.
GRPH 2B06 Typography 2: Structures
In this course students will explore typographic structures, focusing on normative and conceptual principles. An in depth analysis is undertaken in this course that explores the letter relationship to the word, the word relationship to the line, lines in relationship to column and the way these elements activate a particular space. Students will be introduced to the basic principles of visual hierarchy and grid structures, as well as the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic qualities of typography.
TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS: An understanding of fundamental typographic systems and structures is essential to this position. The applicant must have senior level design experience and knowledge of typographic terminology and principles.
GRPH 3B18 GRAPHIC DESIGN 3
The impact of corporate visual communication on our culture and society is explored in this course. Students learn to decipher and create visual hierarchal systems and to understand the intelligent interaction of typography with illustration, photography and graphic symbol. With a focus on experimentation, and innovative and creative thinking students develop effective concepts and a range of visual solutions.
TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS: An understanding of communication design theory, photography, typography, motion graphics and applied practice is essential to this position. The applicant must have a senior level of design experience.
GRPH 3B21 Advanced Typography
This course is designed for students who wish to further their investigation into the structural and communicative aspects of typography and refine their process of using type to enhance meaning. Building on skills and knowledge acquired in previous courses, students will work on advanced typographic systems that integrate conceptual and theoretical perspectives on syntactics, semantics and pragmatics.
TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS: An understanding of advanced typographic systems and structures is essential to this position. The applicant must have a senior level of design experience and knowledge.
Teaching and related responsibilities include: course outline development, preparation and delivery; participation in Faculty and program meetings; studio supervision where applicable, including responsibility for health & safety and meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.
• Graduate degree in art, design, or equivalent professional achievement with a high level of expertise in the relevant subject and outstanding communication skills, is required.
• Post-secondary teaching experience is desirable.
• Understanding of communication design theory, design principles, processes, photography, typography, drawing and applied practice (where applicable).
• Applicant must have a senior level of design experience and knowledge of the basics of communication design excellence (where applicable)

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Sessionals are hired annually on a per-course basis with fixed-term contracts of up to five (5) studio courses per academic year. Sessional salary rates are $3,861 to $5,454 per course, plus 11% pay in lieu of vacation and benefits. These positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels.
