OCAD University is turning 135!

OCAD University - 135 Years of Imagination We thank you — our students, faculty, staff, alumni, volunteers, patrons and supporters - for making us Canada's university of the imagination! Celebrate with us on Saturday, October 29 as we mark our birthday with a full day of celebrations!

OCAD University is proud to participate in Digifest, an international festival happening across Toronto that celebrates innovation and digital creativity from October 26 to 30. Two major free presentations are hosted by OCAD U on Saturday, October 29:

Logo for DigifestThe All Our Digital Futures conference is a full-day, free conference taking place on October 29 at OCAD University's South Campus. Papers will be presented by Jonathan Belman of NYU/Tiltfactor, Steve Engels of the University of Toronto, Andrea Gunraj, Susana Ruiz and Ashley York of METRAC, OCAD U's Fanny Chevalier, and Michael Page, Luigi Ferrara, Jean-Paul Amore, Nicholas Packwood and Nick Crampton of George Brown College, Isabel Pedersen, Joanne McNeish and Luke Simcoe of Ryerson University, and David Owen from York University. The conference runs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Digifest's TOJam Arcade takes place in OCAD U's Great Hall. The games showcase will be open on Saturday, October 29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Toronto Independent Game Development Jam (TOJam) is a free, annual game-making event open to everyone, and the TOJam Arcade will showcase games from past TOJam events. A cocktail reception will open the presentation the night before, on Friday, October 28 from 7 p.m. to midnight (free).

OCAD University throws open its doors to prospective students and their families on Saturday, October 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for our 7th annual look inside the world of art and design. Take a studio tour, watch a student demo, talk with faculty and staff, or explore the possibilities of our new graduate studies offerings. We'll provide a glimpse of emerging trends and show you where art and design practice is making new connections. Imagine yourself here!

Exhibition Reception and Birthday Party
Finally, we'll close the day with the launch of Seeing OCAD University: Highlights from the Paul & Joyce Chapnick Collection, an exhibition celebrating OCAD University's 135th anniversary. Onsite [at] OCAD U celebrates the university's 135th birthday with an exhibition of acclaimed work by our community members that has been collected over thirty years by Joyce and Paul Chapnick. The Chapnicks' outstanding compilation includes Rudolf Bikkers, Graham Coughtry, Ken Danby, Eldon Garnett, John Gould, Fred Hagen, Irene Healey, Suzy Lake, William McElcheran, John Newman, Diane Pugen, Richard Robertson, Michèle White, and many more. Join us for a toast to mark our official birthday, and cake! The party takes place on Saturday, October 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. with remarks at 5 p.m.

Dr. Sara Diamond, President of OCAD University is pleased to invite you to a free public talk by legendary singer, songwriter and guitarist Gilberto Gil, of Brazil. Gil will launch the 2011/12 President's Speaker Series with his talk "The Power of the Arts" (registration required).

Faculty of Design Speaker Series:
"Material Matters: New Smart Materials & Applications"
Thursday, November 17, 6:30 p.m.
The series kicks off with a panel discussion featuring Blaine Brownell (University of Minnesota, School of Architecture and Founder, Transstudio/ Transmaterial), Els Ziljstra (Creative Director and Founder of Materia, Netherlands) and Stephanie Forsythe (Principle and Founder of MOLO Designs, Vancouver).
