OCAD appoints Susan K. Roth as Dean, Faculty of Design

Toronto, August 22, 2008 — The Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan K. Roth as Dean of its Faculty of Design, effective January 1, 2009.

“Susan Roth’s experience and leadership in design research, socially responsible design and interdisciplinary design education make her a perfect fit for OCAD,” said President Sara Diamond. “Her decision to join us is yet another sign of our university’s increasingly global reach and ability to attract the best and brightest faculty and students from around the world.”

Roth is currently Associate Dean, Research & Academic Affairs, of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of the Arts in Richmond, Virginia, the top-ranked public university graduate program in art and design in the United States.

“As a designer and as an academic, I’m really excited to be coming to OCAD at a time when it’s launching new master’s programs and expanding and renewing its already cutting-edge undergraduate curriculum,” said Roth, who is also Interim Director of VCU’s da Vinci Center for Innovation in Product Design and Development.

Previously, Roth was Associate Dean and Chair of the Department of Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, where she co-founded and co-directed the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Art and Design. She has also served as Associate Dean at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City and taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Roth’s work is wide-ranging, from advising graduate students on computer interface design and instructional technologies to studying the design and usability of ballots. Her research has been widely published in journals and presented at conferences and symposia throughout the United States and internationally.

Roth holds a Master of Arts in Design Education from Ohio State University, as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in visual art from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City.

“Professor Roth’s appointment is great news not just for our Faculty of Design, but for our entire university,” said Sarah McKinnon, Vice-President, Academic. “I know that our faculty and students can’t wait to welcome her to Toronto and to OCAD.”
