Stuart Reid and Ann Urban win annual teaching awards

Stuart Reid and Ann Urban were announced as the winners of the 2011/12 teaching awards at OCAD University's recent Faculty Appreciation Event. The two awards, the Price Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Non-Tenured Faculty Teaching Award, have prizes of $2,000 and $500 respectively.

The Price Award for Excellence in Teaching, created by Mamie and J.H. Price, recognizes the contributions of full-time faculty members at OCAD University. Past recipients include Faculty of Art professors Colette Whiten, Michele White, Stan Krzyzanowski and Ian Carr-Harris, and Faculty of Design professors Keith Rushton, Peter Oliver and Robert Mitchell. The Non-Tenured Faculty Teaching Award is dedicated to CLTA, Sessional and Continuing faculty for excellence in teaching at OCAD U. Past recipients include Nicole Collins from the Faculty of Art, and Spencer J. Harrison from the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Reid and Urban's exceptional teaching contributions were recognized by anonymous nominations submitted by members across the OCAD U community, including students, faculty, alumni and administration. Both are long-time instructors at the university.

Outside of his dedicated teaching in the Faculty of Design, Professor Reid is an internationally renowned glass artist as well as an architectural and urban designer, a painter and poet. His public architectural glass works in Toronto include windows in St. James Cathedral (unveiled and dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II), the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, the Intercontinental Toronto Centre and Bloorview Kids Rehab. His works abroad include a major two-storey artwork for the Salzburg Congress.

Urban's professional practice includes the founding of Urban & Co. Inc., where she built profitable brands for over one hundred blue-chip companies. She has been recognized with over fifty awards for design and creative achievement. Urban has taught with this exceptional expertise in the Advertising program for over 27 years.

The Price Award for Excellence in Teaching will be presented formally at OCAD U's convocation ceremony at Roy Thomson Hall on June 8.
