Illustration student awards

  • Several OCADU Illustration students are recipients of the Applied Arts Illustration Student Awards! All will have their work published in the November/December 2016 Student Awards annual and published online in November in the Winners' Gallery and in the Awards Archive. In addition, their work will be displayed at the Creative Futures Expo, November 8-9 at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, which historically draws over 1500 visitors. Congratulations to all!   • 3x3 has selected 20 illustrations by OCAD U students to be published in its 3x3 Illustration Annual No. 13and website. In addition, a gold medal was awarded to Avery Kua (4th year)!

  • Congratulations to Kyle Stewart, medal winner for OCAD University's 101st Graduate Exhibition (GradEx) for his project “The Past Recedes”! Mixing interdisciplinary approaches of screen-print, acrylic gouache, ballpoint, sculpture and digital, his project aims to blur the line between commercial and fine art with his belief that the rules and approaches are interchangeable.   • American Illustration has recognized several of our students for their work! Avery Kua (4th yr) has been awarded a page in the upcoming AI 35 Annual, to be launched November 2016 during New York’s Illustration Week. Her work was selected among 340 from 10,000 international entries! As well, Lily Snowden-Fine (1st yr), Wenting Li (3rd yr), Maxwell Galley (4th yr) and Adam Glowienka (4th year) also have work chosen for American Illustration’s online web site! This year’s distinguished jury included Creative Directors and Art Directors from The New York Times Book Review, SVP, Golf Digest, Family Circle, Point Five Design, ProPublica and The Wall Street Journal.

  • American Illustration has featured OCADU ILLU alumna (2008) Hanna Barczyk on their website!

  • Congratulations to Francesca Chan (3rd yr), Jean Demers (4th yr), Jacqueline Li (4th yr) and Jinke Wang (2nd yr) whose work will be featured on CQ43’s Online Gallery this summer! (March 2016)

  • New York’s Society of Illustrators has accepted work by both Francesca Chan (3rd year) and Meaghan Way (4th year) into the 2016 Student Scholarship Competition! Their work was chosen from 8,700 entries by an esteemed jury of illustrators and art directors representing various publications such as The New York Times and Time. Francesca and Meaghan will be exhibiting their winning illustrations in New York’s Museum of American Illustration this May when scholarship winners will be announced. The Society awards over $50,000 in scholarships ranging from $100 to $5,000! In addition, their work will be published in the Society’s annual, Illustrators 58. (March 2016)

  • The Queens Start-up Summit is a university-wide competition to create a ready for market start-up pitch within a weekend. This year OCAD University students were found in each winning team: Marvin Lau (Advertising) and Igor-Manuel Aldomar Jurczyk (Industrial Design) were on the first-place team for their project, Spaces, a contextual furniture store run on an e-commerce platform. The second-place team included Grace Walker (Graphic Design) and Mickie Halpern (Illustration), and the third-place team hadKamilah Carter (Graphic Design). (February 2016)

  • Jean-Luc Xavier-Bonifay has received an award of excellence from Communication Arts Magazine's 57th Annual Illustration Competition for his work Oil Gun. (February 2016)

  • In Creative Quarterly 42, 4th year ILLU student, Jean-Luc Bonifay won in the Student Illustration category and had another piece recognized in the Illustration runners-up list, along with 4th year ILLU student, Yinghong (Evonne) Shen. (December 2015)
  • Andrea Heisz, 3rd-year Illustration student, was awarded for her gif "Rube Goldberg Machine Created by Unfortunate Mishaps"  by the American Illustration-American Photography International Motion Art Awards.  ai-ap.com (October 2015)
  • OCAD University Illustration students won big in 3x3 International Student Show No 12! Fourteen illustrations by OCAD U students have been selected for publication in 3x3 International Student Show No 12. Congratulations to Silver Medal and Honorable Mention winner Long Hui Wang (4th year); Silver Medal and Multiple Merit winner Hong Chen (2nd year); Multiple Merit winner Lynden Joudrey (4th year); Merit and Honorable Mention winners Heidi Berton and Kaitlyn Richardson (both 4th year); Merit winners Cornelia Li and Paige Clark (both 4th year); and Honorable Mention winners Marley Allen-Ash (4th year) and Milena Bassen (3rd year)!   • Gracia Lam (ILLU alumni 2009), winner of the Distinguished Alumni Awards' Trailblazer Award, has been profiled by American Illustration. (April 2015)
  • Cornelia Li (4th year) has been awarded the $1,000 In Memory of Nancy Cheadle SOI Scholarship from the New York Society of Illustrators for her piece Isolation. (April 2015)
  • Long Hui Wang (4th year) has been awarded the $500 In Memory of Helen Wohlberg Lambert and Herman Lambert SOI Scholarship from the New York Society of Illustrators for his piece Constructing Future. Generations. (April 2015)
  • Third-year ILLU student Shin-Ning (Koko) Lee had an illustration accepted into the Illustration West 53 Exhibit of the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles. (January 2014)
  • Third-year ILLU student Avery Kua has been awarded the First Prize Scholarship from the James Lee Foundation. The foundation was formed by a partnership of advertising agencies, the AABC. Since 2008, a $5,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a new creative talent entering the industry. Shen Plum, an OCAD U ILLU student, was the first recipient from this foundation. (December 2014)
  • Gracia Lam (graduated 2009) was featured in American Illustration's Design Arts Daily. The book project she mentioned is a refinement of her thesis project. (November 2014)
  • Hudson Christie (graduated 2014) animated a gif for ESPN. (November 2014)
  • Ashley Mackenzie, Illustration Program Medal winner, is showcased in Communication Arts magazine. (November 2014)
  • This year at the Adobe Design Achievement Awards we have one OCAD U finalist in Illustration: Yana Vorontsov. Yana is competing against students from the Royal College of Art and National Taiwan Normal University. There is strong representation from the AICAD schools as well as international entries across the competition. (August 2014)
  • Applied Arts Magazine winners are Emma Blackshaw (PHOTO), Hong Chen (2nd-year ILLU in 2013/14), Bonnie Cheung (ADVR), Sarah Eldershaw (ID), Hoda Gharai, Sang Hee Lee and Cornelia Li (4th-year ILLU, graduated this May). (July 2014)

  • June 6, 2014, at the National Magazine Awards Gala, both Gold Medals and one of two Silver Medals for Illustration were awarded to 2009 OCAD ILLU alumni: Selena Wong and Gracia Lam. (June 2014)
  • The Illustration program had multiple winners in the Creative Quarterly 36 Competition. Creative Quarterly is a New York journal of art and design. Four of our 4th-year thesis students won, which appears to be the most from any one school: Hudson Christie (our program medalist, who's currently working on a NY Book Review piece), Kayla Free, Yana Voronstov and Eileen Yoon. Another four students are runners-up: Jungwon Yoo (4th yr), Natalie V. Bochenska, Meghan Dearlove and Janet Park (June 2014)
  • Illustration students have been selected as semifinalists in the 2014 Adobe Design Achievement Awards: Rosena Fung "Self Love" & "Make Up"; JW Pang "Metropolis", "Study" & "Restart"; Michael Pitropov "Lucid Light Dream Erosion" & "Coma Shutdown"; Jason Stamatyades "Life At The Periphery"; Avery Kua "Sentinel"; Cornelia Li "This Gold Is Tarnished"; Kelly Hu "Uncommon Sense"; other Illustration students works are also featured at Adobe's site; (June 2014)
  • Hudson Christie, OCADU Medal Winner: Christie's series of images, Work-Life Balance, depicts 10 people who must multi-task to juggle their incompatible jobs and hobbies, sometimes in a disturbing juxtaposition.  (May 2014)
  • In February Illustration students' inclusion in the Society of Illustrators Scholarship show which opened in May in New York at the Museum of American Illustration. Three students were selected: Brandon Celi, Hudson Christie, Rosena Fung and Jungwon Yoo and one, Brandon Celi, was awarded a Scholarship. He was one of 25 scholarship winners selected from 8500 international entries.  (May 2014)
  • In November Min Gyo Chung won both the Grand Prizes for Illustration and Traditional Media in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards. (May 2014)
