Professional Development

Permanent faculty, technicians and academic councilors have two means to access funding from the University for their Professional Development (PD).

1. Professional Development Expense Fund

The first source of funding is called the Professional Development Expense Fund. Under the MOA, each permanent faculty member is allotted $750 per year out of this fund. Although not guaranteed under the MOA, the university is extending a similar benefit of $350 to each permanent technician and academic counsellor. These amounts are prorated for workload and available per academic year. Eligible expenses are outlined under section 21.4.2 of the MOA, and are not awarded on a competitive basis. 2. Professional Development Opportunity Fund

The second source of funding is called the Professional Development Opportunity Fund, a competitive funding process intended to give permanent faculty members, technicians and academic counsellors resources in addition to their PD Expense Fund allotment. Awards from the fund are made by means of a triannual competition adjudicated by the Professional Development Committee. While there is no guarantee of funding, applicants have the opportunity to receive up to $3,000  per year. For faculty, the MOA states that these projects are:

 

 “To support faculty in their pursuit of new professional skills within their specific art and/or design discipline; to enhance their expertise and effectiveness as educators; to support and encourage their research and professional practice as scholars and/or art or design practitioners, in relation to their responsibilities at the University; and/or to assist the University in meeting its educational and institutional mandate.”



For permanent technicians and academic counselors, the MOA states that these projects are:



“To support academic staff in their pursuit of new skills or knowledge within their specific professional discipline, in relation to their responsibilities at the university; and/or to assist the university in meeting its educational and institutional mandate.”



Applications for the Professional Development Opportunity Fund are due on or before September 10, January 10 and March 31 of each year.

Faculty members should familiarize themselves with the University's Reimbursement Policy as it governs all claims made under the PD Expense and PD Opportunity Funds.
